CHAPTER ELEVEN

The Jaguar stepped away from me still smacking his lips and rubbing his hands together. He was a totally repulsive little man, but I had to keep smiling—at least for now. He gestured to two of the better-looking prison guards and they came over and searched me, not without getting a few good feels in. They checked out my purse and finding that it was completely empty except for the rolled-up jumpsuit which they didn't recognize and a few makeup items, gave it back to me. They did the same thing with the other four girls—Rose, Jacaranda, Mira, and Copi. The girls did not object to the treatment. I assumed that they had known what to expect. They giggled and joked with the guards as they were thoroughly checked out.

Afterward we went into the main building which housed the guards and the Jaguar. We were ushered into a large room which was evidently used for card playing, television watching, and general game playing. I toyed nervously with the cross hanging around my neck. I had no idea what time it was but I knew it must be close to ten-thirty and that didn't leave me much time to get away from the Jaguar and in touch with Simón and keep the rendezvous with Pepe at one am I sat down at a card table and the Jaguar asked me what I would like to drink.

"A light scotch and water, please." Marcoleta formally introduced me to my "date" for the evening. He played with his nearly nonexistent mustache, eyeing me like a silent movie villain.

"Eve is a lovely name," he murmured.

"Thank you," I replied. "Is Jaguar a nickname?" I asked.

"It's the only name I'm known by," he replied, his eyes blazing with pride.

There were eight guards to the four whores. The girls were going to have their hands...and everything else full. Music was coming from an antique record player and the girls and the guards began to dance... two guards with each girl. It was rather like a ménage a trois only standing up.

I became aware of someone staring at me. I turned and saw the ugliest man I have ever seen. He was thin, almost to the point of emaciation, his face was hollow, his eyes sunken, and his great 'horse teeth gave him the appearance of a skeleton. He was wearing a prison uniform and was holding my drink in his hand. I took it from his long bony fingers and shuddered. The Jaguar seemed to be amused by my discomfort.

"That's Kiskadee. He's one of the prisoners here. He's a particular favorite of mine."

I turned my face away from the repulsive man, sipped my drink and said lightly, "Kiscadee, isn't that the name of a South American bird?"

"That's right. He's named that because like the bird he supplements his diet by catching flies and eating them."

I gagged on my drink and began coughing. The Jaguar leaned back in his chair and laughed. "That's all right, Eve," he said wiping the tears from his eyes.
